About fire & ice sauna

fire & ice sauna is an artisan sauna design/build company creating beautiful breathable sauna spaces using natural materials and time-tested design principles to support your sweat bathing and hot/cold immersion experiences.

We produce custom indoor, outdoor, and mobile saunas, handcrafted in Central Vermont, aka N’dakinna, the traditional, ancestral, and unceded homeland of the Western Abenaki people

High Performance Natural Building Meets Sauna

As builders with a background in low impact and high performance building with a natural twist, we believe that our saunas deserve the same initiative.

Our "breathable" wall systems are built air-tight and vapor permeable, reducing the amount of moisture-laden air from entering the wall cavity, while concurrently maximizing drying potential.  This prevents moisture buildup and subsequent structural damage, mold growth, or the attraction of pests, which can be detrimental to people’s health and the longevity of the building.

Some of the natural and low VOC materials we use include wood fiber or sheep’s wool insulation, natural wood finishes, and steel. In the case of the mobile saunas, we use foil and smart weather-rain-barrier membranes. Natural materials have less impact on the environment and on the body. This is especially true in the hotroom where we make sure all materials are chemically inert and high heat resistant.

We strive to source local material, whenever possible. For example, we feature local wood such as Northern White Cedar, which is logged and milled right here in Vermont. Its beauty, longevity, and distinctive fragrance make it well suited to sauna building. Other local lumber includes Eastern Hemlock and White Pine. We are also patiently anticipating the market arrival of wood fiber insulation produced locally in the northeast, coming 2023.
